How to Be Grateful for Small Things — Why Gratitude ROCKS

“I’m grateful for the beautiful rainforest, and the wet liquid air, the vibrancy of all the stunning volume of life that grows in this forest. And did I say I’m really grateful for this slow little person having a hard time going down the trail in the torrential puddle city? I’m grateful for the puddles, I’m grateful for the sound of my boots, I’m grateful for little wee dogs, and pretty friends.”

And here I am on a beautiful little getaway on the wild west coast of British Columbia. This is Port Renfrew, British Columbia. It’s a little special place called Botanical Beach, and it’s gorgeous. And they will show some little highlights of other things, there’s all kinds of sea creatures going here. And I’m here at the end of November, American Thanksgiving really, in a time of gratitude. And it’s it’s weird in some respects to think about gratitude right now because there’s a pandemic going on, the economy is going to hell, and frankly, we could ask for better weather here on the west coast too. But there’s always stuff to be grateful.”

“And on this occasion, I’m here with a real beautiful lovely friend, and we’re celebrating her moving on to a new job. She’s got a promotional a lot of great opportunity happening in her life. And in some respects, with all the other stuff going on, we might be reluctant to say oh, this is a wonderful thing. Let’s stop and pause and celebrate. But it’s all the more important that now, of all times, we express gratitude and we be appreciative of just the good things that are going on in our lives. And obviously, this beautiful spot, I’m tremendously grateful for. But really, in a very fundamental day-to-day way, there’s so much to be grateful for. It’s it’s a healthy home that I’m still living in, no no coronavirus in my household. The fact there’s secure food on my table day after day after day, the fact that I live in a society that’s generally safe. I’m not worried about crime in my neighborhood for the most part. And the fact that I’ve got loving family and friends in my life. I’ve got access to modern technology, hot water, and good Netflix TVs, and you name it, there’s so much to be grateful for.”

“And really, isn’t this a time when we should all be pausing and considering exactly that, what have we got to be grateful for? And are there things in your life that deserve a little bit of celebration, a little marker that says, yeah, this is a good thing? And you know, it doesn’t have to be as big deal as this, as us going away to a beautiful little cabin on a gorgeous remote spot where we’re the only people on this huge amazing beach. There may be little ways in your life that you can say, hey, I got a good compliment for my boss. Gee, the mechanic found that there was very little wrong with the car and it’s still in really good shape after all these years. Or man, that was a great phone call with my mom. Or whatever it is, are there things in your life that are going really well and deserve that little bit of a punctuation, that’s a yeah, this is fantastic. And if there are some of those things, I encourage you to let your hair down a tiny bit. You know, pour a glass of wine, bake a cake, um, you know, treat yourself to an indulgent movie from 20 years ago that you know that you love, buy yourself a box of chocolates because gosh, that can be an amazing treat. Are there little things in your life that are worth celebrating? And if so, take your time now to be grateful.”

“And don’t get washed away in the suds that are here, maybe have some suds in your bubble bath. Be grateful, appreciate life for all its beauty. Now more than ever, when all these things are going on in our lives that are hard and challenging. I’ve got this beautiful woman on the other side of this camera and I’m going to celebrate these next 72 hours we’ve got just thinking what a wonderful beautiful lovely person she is in my life and that’s something I can be grateful for.
